We are only two weeks away from Halloween and you can finally tell by looking at my house. I got a late start since I was out of town at the beginning of the month, but I’m slowly but surely catching up. Despite having a lot of storage in our New House™, the majority of the Halloween decorations are stored off site (yes, I still have a storage facility). It’s taken me a number of trips, but the yard is pretty close to being done. Most of the big stuff is up, but I still need to set up lighting, fog machines, and decide which costumes will be going on the Fake Shemps.
Listening To: I recently finished and thoroughly enjoyed Small Town Horror by Ronald Malfi and just started The Ritual by Adam Nevill. I just acquired a new set of headphones, so I’ve been listening to audiobooks while setting up the yard.
Currently Reading: I haven’t had much time to do any physical reading lately, but I’m hoping that will change once I get caught up on everything.
Current Obsession: Horror movies, natch.
Dragon’s Roost Press News
We’re hard at work on the survey for the recently funded Kickstarter campaign. I know that there is an easier way to do this, but I can’t remember what it is and it’s frustrating the mess out of me.
We don’t have any more appearances before Halloween, but we do have a new show that we will be doing next month. We have been accepted as a vendor for Holy Bones’ Tales from the Cryptid being held 8 November (Friday) from 5pm - 9pm at the Ypsilanti Freight House.
The GLAHW Monster Mash for Literacy Bash will be held on Saturday 26 October at the Berkley VFW (Post 9222). Doors open at 8pm.
This Week’s Rambling: It’s Horror Movie Time
There are a couple of horror movie lists going around which give suggestions of either titles or types of movies to watch — one for each day of the month. As mentioned above, this is a really busy month, so I’m not going to dedicate myself to that. There’s no way that I could deal with just picking and choosing but not going the whole list.
I have, of course, been watching plenty of horror during the month. I attended the 12 Hour Horror Movie Marathon on Saturday which allowed me to revisit a number of great visits as well as a new one. For the sake of brevity, I’ll just spotlight movies which I’ve seen for the first time over the past few weeks.
Very Frightening Tales while I’m a sucker for a good horror anthology, it has to be a good horror anthology. This is not that. We bailed around the halfway mark.
V/H/S/Beyond another attempt at an anthology and another disappointment. I have mostly enjoyed the V/H/S series, but most of the entries in this collection fall flat. The wrap-around piece was mediocre at best and some of the shorts don’t match up to it at all.
Terrifier 3 This was the final movie in the 12 Hour Horror Movie Marathon. There was also the option to see Shaun of the Dead in the other theater. I had just watched SotD so I checked out Art the Clown’s latest appearance. It wasn’t the gore that got me on this one, but the fact that I had no idea what was going on. This is partially my own fault, because I hadn’t seen the second film. I have seen the first movie. The third one did not make me feel like I have to complete the trilogy.
Smile 2 Finally, I broke my curse. I got to see an advanced screening of the sequel to Smile, a movie which I enjoyed. I thought this sequel was quite well done. Expect a review soon.
